This artwork embodies the unshakable spirit associated with the Japanese deity Fudō Myōō, the wrathful guardian and protector in service to the Dainichi Buddha. Fudō Myōō is revered for his fierce determination, often symbolizing the immovable mind or spirit known as fudoshin. Samurai frequently invoked his image, displaying it on their armour to embody this steadfastness in battle. In this example, the front of the armour is decorated with a Dragon-King, forming the manifestation between the dragon and the sword of Fudō Myōō.
In the composition, Fudō Myōō is replaced by our protagonist surrounded by the Four other Wisdom Kings (Godai Myōō). Fudo’s figure is partly obscured by a female warrior, the onna-bugeisha, who stands resolute, embodying the unwavering mental state that Fudō represents. Unlike the traditional samurai sword often associated with the warrior class, she wields a large-calibre matchlock firearm, blending ancient symbolism with the advancing technology of the era. This juxtaposition reinforces the evolving nature of strength and power while maintaining the core concept of an immovable spirit.
